Keep dirt out
While clay-based ceramic and porcelain tiles are resistant to wear and tear, dirt and debris can mar them over time. That's why it's a good idea to put a doormat inside an entryway as well as outside. An eco-friendly coir, or coconut fiber, doormat does its job well and absorbs moisture. A synthetic fiber doormat with a natural rubber backing is another good option.
Weekly cleaning
Abrasive cleaning tools and harsh chemicals are never necessary with tile flooring and may cause damage. Instead, sweep with a house broom or vacuum cleaner daily or at least two to three times a week. Weekly:
- Mop with a microfiber mop, warm water, and mild detergent.
- Use a clean microfiber mop and warm water to remove detergent residue.
- Buff with a clean, lint-free cloth.
Grout
Since grout is usually light-colored and prone to staining, giving it an excellent annual cleaning is necessary to keep your tile flooring looking its best. A commercial grout stain remover and a grout scrubber are all needed to complete the job. Spray and wiper liquid cleaners and 'scour with a brush' cleaners are available, but they tend to contain harsh solvents.
