Color, lighting and space planning are all integral aspects when designing spaces. Perhaps one of the best ways to add interest to a space, aside from these key components, is by incorporating texture. What exactly do we mean by texture? Well, as defined by the design community, texture is “the sensations caused by the external surface of objects received through the sense of touch.” Texture adds balance in addition to visual weight. Just like creating contrast with colors, you can create contrast with textures to get the same effect. Test it out by putting something rough against something smooth. The smooth surface will make the rough surface stand out and will add visual interest to your space.

One of the best ways to add texture to a space is by mixing textiles. Whether it be a colorful, patterned tile or a natural fiber rug. At our showroom, we have thousands of products to help make your space stand out.

Here are a few of my favorite textural products that we feature at our Harrisburg Pike Showroom:

-Yesterday’s Glass by Jeffrey Court is a product that I absolutely adore. This oxidized glass tile, available in 3×6 and 8×16 sizes, is a unique texture that will be sure to make your space pop.

-The Textile Glass Series from AKDO is another one of my favorites, available in 6 different colors and 3 different patterns. Perhaps consider incorporating one of these glass tile mosaics in a shower to add a unique textural focal point.

-The Apex Diamond Rug from Stanton’s Antrim Collection is a natural fiber, geometric-carved carpet. This material is 100% wool and would make for a fabulous area rug for a bedroom or living room area.

The Dymo series made by MSI, is a uniquely wave-textured wall tile, perfect if you are looking to add a contemporary flair to your space.

-These days you can even incorporate different textures into your countertop surfaces! Leathered Natural Stone has recently become a very popular trend. Fantasy Brown Granite is one of my all time favorites. As opposed to the stone being polished, the surface is leathered giving it a unique feel and look.

For assistance with selecting materials for your next project, any of our designers at either of our Lancaster tile and flooring or Marble Yard showrooms would be happy to help.

Every year in June, members of the Interior Design world flock to Chicago for North America’s largest and most important design exposition and conference for commercial interiors: NeoCon. More than 700 of the leading companies in the commercial interiors world launch thousands of new products into the market.

This year, one of our favorite commercial carpet and flooring providers, Shaw Contract, launched a ton of new products! Two of the product lines, “Active” and “Off the Grid,” are some of our favorite new releases of the year.

 .

The “Active” collection utilizes graphic, linear patterns and bold, fluorescent colors in an effort to keep workplace occupants energized and alert. The main inspiration for the styles within the “Active” product line has been derived from the textures, shapes and patterns used in active wear. The design team focused on how those same techniques can be interpreted into flooring that can really activate a space.

This collection features four styles in a 12”x48” carpet tile and three brand new fluorescent colors.

The “Off the Grid” collection focuses on bringing nature into our built environments as workplace design trends show a shift towards needing more reflective, calm spaces. This collection features very textural and organic patterns and natural, calming colors. To gain inspiration for “Off the Grid,” the design team headed out into nature to observe organic patterns in things like spider webs and moss.

This collection features two broadloom styles and four styles in 12”x48” carpet tiles.

Congo and Canary Hand Loomed Rugs and Carpet

I’d like to showcase two of the newest additions to the Antrim line from Stanton, Congo and Canary. What beautiful woven wool carpet patterns they’ve created in a lovely color palette!

Antrim Canary

Canary is a mini chevron pattern available in 7 different colors that all incorporate a neutral base of either ivory or white. There’s a lovely color called Cord, which is like a clean straw hue combined with a soft ivory. The Wave combination features a powder blue and white while the Ink variation is a crisp navy and white. Also available in Dove, Metal, and Earth the Canary style is perfect for any room in your home that needs a little floor lift!

Antrim Congo

Congo is the sister style to Canary. It is available in the same color palette as Canary but is a traditional herringbone pattern with a five inch stripe. This could be a dynamic stair and hallway runner or a stunning area rug in anyone’s home. It feels both fresh and traditional offering the perfect answer for anyone looking for that transitional element.

Accommodating and Luxurious

Both of these styles come in 15 foot widths so creating an area rug or installing in a wall to wall carpet application in most rooms will not require a seam. The dense 100% wool guarantees years of luxurious durability in addition to being both non-allergenic, air purifying and naturally flame retardant.

Stop in and look at both of these lovely new styles from Antrim along with several new offerings from Stanton, Karastan, Kane, Tuftex and many others.

As a designer nothing is more exciting than a new trend in design materials. In the world of tile, some of the most recent popular design trends have included gray tones and wood looks. Although, I am a huge fan of both of these looks, nothing excites me more than when something new and different makes a statement in the design industry. A product that just recently hit our showroom floor (no pun intended) is the Noga Cement Tile line from Garden State Tile.

Handmade Cement Tiles were largely popular in the 19th century and are since making a comeback. These bold looking tiles are not only hand-made but are created using sustainable and environmentally friendly materials, just as they were back in the 19th century. These particular cement tiles are made with white and gray cements, quartz, marble dust and various other pigments. The tiles are not fired or glazed but are pressed and then placed in a water bath and left to cure for 28 days in a mist room. During the 28 day curing process, the tiles are continuously misted with water to aid in making them more durable. The Noga Cement tile line incorporates original and historically accurate designs, as well as exclusive, modern motifs. These tiles are available in 8×8 sizes (with 5/8” thickness), and in a variety of solid and patterned colors to be used in commercial or residential flooring. These tiles are also suitable to be used in wall and backsplash applications.

For those of you that know me as a designer, you know that I am a sucker for black and white color palettes. One of my favorite designs in this particular tile line is the Abigale Tile. I think this tile would be a lovely selection for use in a bathroom or laundry room/mudroom area. Coupled with white cabinetry, gold hardware and perhaps a marble look quartz countertop material, a room sporting this tile would make quite the sophisticated statement.  Being that these cement tiles are 8”x8” they would probably look best used in a small to mid-sized room application. The scale of a tile is extremely important when considering what room it should be used in. For those individuals who are looking to add color and interest to a small or mid-sized room, these tiles would be an excellent option to consider. When thinking about flooring options carpet is always a favorite especially for bedrooms and family rooms. The soft fibers underfoot and the acoustic aspect make carpet a natural for these areas. Additionally, the vast array of colors, textures, and patterns available bring your unique personality into any area.

Carpet is the most inexpensive flooring option in most cases. Easy to install, it generally requires no more than furniture moving to give your home an instant update!

The majority of carpet companies now offer more than traditional wall to wall installation, they are also offering custom sized area rugs made to your specifications. This is a great idea for formal living  or dining rooms, or any other area you would like to a pop of color or texture.  Whether you’d like a rug bound in a corresponding or contrasting color or serged, which is similar to whipstitching, is another way to personalize your rug.

For young families with pets and children Shaw has a great line ,”Life Happens”, which features an impervious backing so no spills or accidents are able to seep through the carpet to the padding and flooring beneath. This makes cleaning an easy fix.

We offer luxury wool and nylon carpets from such noted companies as Stanton, Fabrica, Couristan, and Kane. We’re also pleased to have added the Karastan line just this month.

We’d love to see you in our expansive showroom and give you a tour of all that’s new in the world of carpet. Hope to see you soon!
