You’ve decided to take the plunge and redo the flooring in your home. That used to be a fairly simple decision. You could get carpeting or linoleum; or tear up the flooring and use the existing hardwood. Now, like so many other thing in our lives, there’s a TON of choices. This applies to flooring too. Today we’re going to go over some of the basics—you have to start somewhere! Here at Indoor City, we carry all the latest types of flooring, from the hottest trends to most traditional and everything in between. Our designers can work with you to select exactly what you want and we’ll install the right way for you too! On to the basics!
Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT)
LVT, or Luxury Vinyl Tile, is the fastest growing floor covering on the market today. Made to mimic the look of natural stone or wood, LVT is a far cry from laminate or sheet vinyl. Made from either 100% vinyl or a vinyl/limestone mixture, this flooring offers durability as well as style. Grout it, don’t grout it, plank it or put it into a pattern – LVT offers a wide range of design possibilities for your home.
You could choose hardwood flooring (new, not your old or existing). This option has an array of directions, colors and types! Anything from solid or engineered, species of wood and color, narrow or wide board, dark or light colored, domestic hickory, imported Brazilian cherry…whew! There’s a seemingly endless amount of options that we won’t explore too much today; for now you should just know whatever you like is probably available to you.
Laminate flooring is becoming popular because of it’s functionality in addition to its look. You get the beautiful appearance of hardwood and ease of cleaning. There are many styles to choose from; not as many as hardwood so if you have trouble making decisions you may want to explore laminate flooring.
Bamboo & Cork
Another fast growing trend in flooring is using bamboo or cork. These types of flooring are great for you if you’re environmentally conscious. Bamboo and cork are both self-sustaining resources that grow quickly and are very renewable. There are a range of color options, some that can be a bit more colorful than hardwood or laminate if you’re feeling adventurous!
Next we have tile flooring, which is similar to hardwood in that you have a myriad of choices to pick from. Porcelain, ceramic, stone and glass are a few of the options and are available in a wide array of styles and colors.
Vinyl flooring is definitely not a new concept. This type has been around for years! But like so many other things, as technology advances, so does the durability and look of vinyl. Vinyl flooring is particularly popular for laundry rooms, kitchens and bathrooms.
Ah, good old carpet—only “old” isn’t really a fair term! Carpeting has come a long way since Grandma’s avocado. Breathtaking patterns and durable fabrics have made carpeting popular once again in the age of hardwood. There are tons and tons fabrics, colors and patterns to choose from that fit any style or décor, so don’t forget to think about carpet as a great flooring choice!
Finally, we come to area rugs. This is the one flooring choice you can combine with other flooring options like hardwood, laminate or vinyl. If you like those types but you want to add a splash of color or personality to a room, an area rug might be for you! Like carpeting, there are many available patterns, colors and fabrics to look at.
Well, we think we’ve given you enough to ponder today; in our next blog we’ll talk about the pros and cons of these flooring types, which types are hot right now and how they can add value to your home! In the meantime, if you need some direction or ideas, make sure you stop in and see us and we’ll get you on your way!
